Genoa is a vast extensive city that sits in the Gulf of Genoa
on the Ligurian Sea in the Northwestern area of Italy. With a present central
population of 588,000 and a better metropolitan population of 1.5 million,
Genoa is the 6th major city in the country and also one of the most significant
economic centers. A staple of the city is its huge port and shipyards that have
been present since the 19th century. As with many areas in Italy, Genoa has
been populated by humans for thousands of years and its usual harbor was used
by both the Romans and Etruscans.
Genoa had a close connotation with the Holy Roman Empire and
was recognized for its fierce fleet of sailors and warriors during the Middle
Ages. In later periods, the city saw a failure due to shifting trade routes and was then seized as part of the Napoleonic Empire. In modern times it helps
once again as a significant part of Italy.
